Nigerian Army Ordered To Pay Actress ₦1.25M For Assault.

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Friday ordered the Nigerian Army to pay the sum of ₦1,250,000 and publish a written apology in at least two national dailies to a Nollywood actress, Ebere Ohakwe, as compensation after she was beaten up by men of the Nigerian Army in February 2017.

Ohakwe, popularly known as Jewel Infinity, was travelling in a public bus from Port Harcourt, Rivers State to Onitsha, Anambra State when operatives of the Nigerian Army stationed at Omagwa axis of the Port Harcourt Airport Road stopped the vehicle for a routine stop-and-search and, in the process, physically assaulted her.

The Federal High Court presided over by Justice Adamu Mohammed had earlier ruled on the matter in March 2018.

Mohammed had ordered the defendants (Nigerian Army) to pay the sum of N1m to the plaintiff as compensation for infringing on her fundamental human rights.

According to PUNCH, but the Nigerian Army through its counsel filed an application to the court to set aside the judgment and resume fresh hearing.

Counsel for the plaintiff, Chime Chime, in a counter-application, urged the court to dismiss the defendant’s submission.

Mohammed, however, struck out the application of the Nigerian Army, stating that it lacked merit.

The judge awarded ₦250,000 against the defendants in addition to N1m the security outfit was expected to pay to the victim, as well as a written apology to her to be published in at least two national dailies.

Stop Electing Uneducated Leaders, Emir Sanusi Warns.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Saturday advised Nigerians to stop electing leaders without education into public offices.

According to TheNation, the Emir said this at the 6th convocation ceremony of Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja.

His words: “We have to take an interest in the quality of our leaders and representatives in the level of education. If you look around this country at many levels of leadership, we have elected and we have chosen to elect people who do not have an education.

And because they are not educated, they cannot give an education. We need to lay more emphasis on the quality of people we elect to executive and legislative offices and we need to make sure that those to whom we entrust policy are themselves educated and know the value of education.

Let us invest more in education and let us give up some of the privileges that we have such as the trillions we are spending subsiding petroleum products. That money should go into educating our young people.

We are spending too much monies on roads and bridges and trains and too little money educating our children. Let us educate these young people and they will build the roads, train and bridges.

We do not need to invite the Chinese to do that for us. And until the leadership at all levels in this country and the followership understand that this is what is most important, because I do understand sometimes that if a governor does not build roads or bridges, he is seen as not have been performed by the people.

We build all these highways and there are more pedestrians on the highways than cars and those pedestrians are most often people without education and help. Development is first and foremost about people.”

Helicopter Belonging To Leicester City Owner Crashes In Flames Outside Club’s Stadium.

A helicopter belonging to Leicester City Football Club’s owner crashed outside the King Power stadium following the match against West Ham.

It is not known if the club’s owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was in the helicopter at the time.

However, an eyewitness told The Independent the owner, his wife and another family member were on board.

The witness, who works at the stadium, said: “The helicopter took off but the rotor at the back failed, it spiralled and it crashed in flames into the car park at the cop end, at the back of the stadium.”

He said he believed four people were on board at the time of the crash, including the pilot.

Pictures from outside the stadium showed a large fire in the club’s car park, where police cars and emergency services rushed towards the scene.

The crash came after Leicester City drew 1-1 with West Ham at home in the Premier League game.

After every Leicester home game, Mr Srivaddhanaprabha leaves the stadium by his helicopter, which lands in the centre circle on the pitch

Lee Hurst, a lifelong Leicester City supporter, said news of the crash was “very upsetting”.

“The owner has been everything to this club, they have made it successful,” he told The Independent.

“They are the heart and soul of this club, without them we wouldn’t have any good players.”

Leicestershire Police confirmed emergency services were dealing with an incident near the football stadium, but have not provided any further details.

Sohail told The Independent: “It will have a massive effect if anything was to happen [to the owner], with a lot of importance for the team and the city itself.

“It is very saddening, the owners were a big part of everything that the team has done.”

Jim Tyrel said: “It’s an awful thing, I live nearby and I usually see the helicopter coming in and out. Something tragic has happened.

“They’ve been fantastic for the team. Within three or four seasons they’ve paid off the debt and won the league.

“They were dedicated to the club, it is a family business and they took this as part of the family. So it is a deep tragedy.”

Leicester City football players – including Jamie Vardy – have tweeted messages of support and are praying for those on board.

A Leicester City spokesman said: “We are assisting Leicestershire Police and the emergency services in dealing with a major incident at King Power Stadium.

“The club will issue a more detailed statement once further information has been established.”

Man Plants Bomb In Car Of Ex-Girlfriend’s Husband To Frame Him As Terrorist.

A man will spend almost four years in prison after planting two bombs in the car of his ex-girlfriend’s husband in an attempt to frame him as a terrorist.

Riyaz Khan, 27, planted the two firework bombs because he was angry that his ex had started another relationship and got married, Leicester Crown Court in London was told.

He also planted sickening child porn images on a USB memory stick in the car in an effort to frame the husband.

Police described one of explosive devices as “viable”, being made from fireworks, and say both were capable of “doing harm”.The second package – which smelt of petrol and had fireworks attached – could also cause destruction, police said.

The discovery, made on June 4, led the Leicester Police bomb squad to close off the city’s Huntingdon Road for nine hours. Khan was arrested on the same day.

On Thursday Khan was jailed for three years and nine months and slapped with a restraining order banning him from contacting his ex-partner or her family.
