Steven Gerrard confirms retirement from football

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has officially announced his retirement from professional football.

The former Reds captain, who spent 17 years in the first team at Anfield and was the club’s skipper from 2003 until his departure in the summer of 2015, confirmed the decision on Thursday morning.

In a statement, he said: “Following recent media speculation surrounding my future I can confirm my retirement from playing professional football.

“I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy.”

The Huyton-born midfielder graduated from Liverpool’s Academy and made his senior debut as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers in November 1998, ultimately clocking up 710 games and 186 goals.

Blessed with natural abilities that made him one of the leading midfielders of his generation, Gerrard was a key figure in the treble-winning season of 2000-01, aiding Gerard Houllier’s team to triumphs in the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup.

His influence steadily grew at Anfield and Houllier handed the Scouser the captain’s armband in October 2003, heralding the beginning of the most consistent and prolific era of his career.

Following the appointment of Rafael Benitez as manager, Gerrard was the talisman of Liverpool’s sensational run to Champions League glory in 2004-05.

A memorable strike against Olympiacos ensured the Reds progressed from the tournament’s group stage and kick-started a fairytale journey to the final in Istanbul.

There, his boyhood side trailed 3-0 to Italian giants AC Milan – but his determination was the catalyst behind an historic comeback, with his header the first of three responses that drew the tie level and paved the way for Benitez’s charges to win the trophy on penalties.

Gerrard was the inspiration behind the club’s 2006 FA Cup triumph, scoring twice in the final with West Ham United – which has subsequently been named after him – en route to another shootout success via a 3-3 draw.

He also helped Liverpool return to the Champions League showpiece in 2007, though on that occasion they were beaten by Milan, and claim a second-place finish in the 2008-09 Premier League.

The No.8 lifted the League Cup under the stewardship of Kenny Dalglish in 2012, and was appointed the captain of his country – for whom he amassed 114 caps before retiring from international football in 2014.

That year, Gerrard came closest to winning the only domestic honour that eluded him, the Premier League, as the Reds produced a stunning charge to take the title race to the final day only to be pipped by Manchester City.

After bidding farewell to Anfield at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season, Gerrard joined LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer, where he played 34 games and scored five goals.

He said: “Thank you to the amazing fans of Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy for the incredible backing you have given me throughout my career. Your loyalty and support has meant the world.

I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be. I am currently taking my time to consider a number of options and will make an announcement with regards to the next stage of my career very soon.”

Donald Trump elected president of United States

Donald Trump will become the 45th president of the United States after Hillary Clinton called him to concede.

The billionaire is about to go on stage to give a victory speech.

Clinton supporters were seen stony-faced or crying at what was supposed to be her victory rally in New York before being sent home by her campaign manager.

John Podesta insisted her campaign was “not done yet” and would have more to say once Americans wake up.

“They are still counting votes, and every vote counts,” he told the crowd.

But across town a triumphant Mr Trump is preparing to address his supporters.

Early exit polls had provided the Democrats with optimism, but shortly after 2am UK time the momentum began to shift as it emerged Mr Trump was edging ahead in a number of key states.

The first swing state to be called for Mr Trump was Ohio at just before 3.30am – and Florida, Iowa, North Carolina and Pennsylvania all followed for the billionaire.

Mrs Clinton looks set to win the popular vote across the nation – but it is Electoral College votes that count.

World markets began to respond as the US map turned Republican red, with falls reported across Asia and the Mexican peso dropping to a record low against the dollar.

Mr Trump will not be inaugurated until 20 January – but thoughts are already turning to what his presidency will look like following promises to build a wall at the Mexican border and to ban Muslims from entering the US.

The 70-year-old will be the oldest person ever inaugurated as US president.

On what turned out to be a dream night for the Republicans, the party also retained control of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Woman Gets Her 20 Boyfriends to Buy Her 20 iPhone 7s, Then Sells Them All and Buys a House

One woman in China has reportedly used the confluence of a double digit number of boyfriends and a hot market for the new iPhone 7 to turn herself into a new homeowner. According to the BBC, a Chinese blogger rehashed the sounds-too-bad-ass-to-be-true story of a colleague who has 20 boyfriends who bought her 20 iPhone 7s, which the colleague then sold for cash to buy a house.

The blogger, who writes under the pen name Proud Qiaoba, wrote last week about her colleague, Xiaoli’s (which the BBC reports is also a pseudonym) path to homeownership, a story which the BBC reports went viral last week. “Who knows what her boyfriends think now this news has become public,” Qiaoba wrote. The BBC reports that it’s a tough buyer’s market for houses in China, making Xiaoli’s claimed accomplishment a source of pride for people who know her. Qiaoba blogged that Xiaoli “is not from a wealthy family. Her mum is a housewife and her dad is a migrant worker, and she is the oldest daughter. Her parents are getting old and she might be under a lot pressure hoping to buy them a house… But it’s still unbelievable that she could use this method!” The BBC talked to a spokesperson at Hui Shou Bao, the company that reportedly bought the woman’s phones. The spokesperson confirmed that the company did purchase 20 phones from one female client for about $885 each, though they refused to put the woman in touch with the media.

The story went viral on the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, where the BBC reports a hashtag that translates to “20 mobiles for a house” has been used over 13 million times, with many women expressing admiration for Xiaoli’s romantic and financial savvy. According to the BBC, one Weibo user posted, “I can’t even find one boyfriend. She can actually find 20 boyfriends at the same time and even get them to buy her an iPhone 7. Just want to ask her to teach me such skills.”

Some others weren’t so friendly in their assessment of Xiaoli’s endeavor, calling her “shameful.”

But Xiaoli reportedly has a house, 20 boyfriends, and for a brief time, 20 iPhone 7s, so it seems like she’s still the one coming out on top.
