SARS Operatives Wrongly Torture Taxify Driver Over Misplaced Bag.

Taxify driver, John Otuechere, who was wrongly accused by his passenger of stealing her bag and eventually tortured by the SARS operatives she reported to, has filed for charges over violation of his human rights. The driver added that he was arrested, detained and tortured on the order of one Mrs Alice Isah.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Isah who came back into the country from training in Dubai on Sunday, July 15, had called the Taxify driver to pick her up from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and drop her off at her residence on Lekki Gardens Estate, Lagos State. Otuechere said while they were on the way, his car developed a fault which prompted him to park to examine the vehicle.

He said: “We were on the Third Mainland Bridge when my car started making an unusual sound. I did not stop because it was dangerous; so I managed it until we left the bridge. “I eventually parked beside a RRS Patrol vehicle to examine the car.

While examining the car, a guy crossed over from the other side of the road to assist me. I don’t know him, but he said he was a mechanic, and we discovered that only one nut was left holding the tyre to the bolts on the driver side.

The woman (Isah) at this point got down from the car to observe what was going on. She saw that we had to unscrew one nut from the other tyres to fasten the tyre on the driver side to the vehichle. I gave the man N100 and he crossed back to the other side of the road before we moved on.”

The 37-year-old driver said they had no other stopover till they got to Isah’s residence where they brought down her luggage. He said the passenger, at this point, discovered that one of her bags had gone missing. Otuechere said he suggested taking her back to the airport to check whether she forgot the bag, adding that instead, Isah accused him of conniving with the mechanic to steal her bag.

He said:

I told her that I would take her to the airport and back for free, but she insisted that she personally put the bag in the boot of my car.

“She held me and started slapping me, calling me a thief.  One of her neighbours and the estate’s chief security officer accompanied her, and I was taken to the Ogombo Police Station.

The second day, when the policeman who investigated the case suggested that we searched for the bag at my house and the airport, she said he was supporting me and she petitioned the state police command and the case was transferred  to Ikeja.

Immediately I got to SARS in Ikeja, a policeman, identified as Omoleme, hit me many times with an iron bar to make me confess in the presence of the woman. He said he would kill me and nothing would happen. I was in tears because of the pain; my blood was all over the floor and I was told to pull off my dress and start cleaning it.

I was taken to the man in charge of SARS; when I tried to explain to him that I was innocent, he ordered his men to hang me because I was not saying the truth.

SARS cell is a graphic picture of hell; I saw over 70 people inside one room and immediately I entered, I was welcomed with several blows, slaps and kicks.”

The Abia State indigene said it took the intervention of his lawyer before the SARS operatives agreed to search for the bag at the airport.

He added that the bag was eventually found and recovered at the airport where the woman forgot it.

Otuechere, whose two fingers had been broken during the torture, said he wanted justice and compensation for being humiliated and tortured for a crime he did not commit.

He said: “When my lawyer saw my condition, she was annoyed with the officers for torturing me without investigation. She insisted that they should search for the bag at the airport; so a policeman went with my sister. I was told that the bag was found at the airport.

When they returned, I was released. The woman has not called to apologise; even the officers of SARS did not apologise for torturing me without investigation. I want justice, I demand a written apology from F-SARS and Mrs Alice Isah for wrongful accusation, detention and torture.

“I also demand ₦10M compensation for my inability to provide for my family because of the torture. Otuechere’s sister, Chika, said Isah was not remorseful of what she did to her brother after they recovered the bag at the airport.

Nigerian-American Bags Jail Time For $900K Email Scam.

meka Ndukwu, 46, a Nigerian-American based in Maryland, has been sentenced to four years in prison for engaging in business e-mail scheme and conspiring to launder more than $900,000 proceeds of scams.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in a statement, said Ndukwu tricked seven companies in the United States and abroad into wiring more than $900,000 into accounts controlled by various co-conspirators. “A co-defendant, Chuka Mbonu, 33, of Nigeria, remains at large,” the U.S. authorities said.

According to the FBI: “Ndukwu, a dual citizen of the United States and Nigeria, pleaded guilty in April 2018 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to one count of money laundering conspiracy. “He was sentenced by the Honourable Timothy J. Kelly.

Following his prison term, he will be placed on three years of supervised release.

The judge also ordered Ndukwu to pay $791,870 in restitution to the companies. “Additionally, Judge Kelly ordered Ndukwu to forfeit a 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL450 and to pay a forfeiture money judgment in the amount of $429,848, representing the share of the criminal proceeds that Ndukwu personally obtained”.

According to documents filed at the time of the plea, Ndukwu participated in an ongoing conspiracy from 2013 through 2017 to receive and launder the proceeds of various cyber frauds, primarily arising from business e-mail (“BEC”) compromise schemes.

In a typical BEC scheme, a co-conspirator tricks a company into transferring large sums of money into accounts controlled by others participating in the scheme. Using fake e-mails, often containing forged sender addresses, co-conspirators impersonate someone connected to the victim company and deceive an employee of that company into wiring funds.

Soon after the wire transfers are completed, the co-conspirators drain the bank accounts and launder the criminal proceeds. “This particular conspiracy targeted at least seven companies in the United States and overseas, including victims in Texas, Illinois, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, India, Japan, and China.

Slain Abuja Corper Angela Igwetu, Laid To Rest.

Yesterday morning was one of soberness and sorrow for the loved ones of Miss Angela Nkechi Igwetu, who was laid to rest weeks after she was gunned down by a trigger happy policeman.

The 23 year old Abuja deployed corper was returning from a hangout with two friends, when a police officer stationed at a checkpoint shot at their car, hitting her at the midriff.

To worsen her case, the director at the Garki general hospital where she was rushed to refused to begin treatment, asking for a police report despite the fact that she was brought in by the police, and demanding a ₦150,000 cash payment upfront before they would begin treatment.

They did begin treatment after over an hour of persuasion but it was too late, as Angela passed less than 30 minutes later, at about 3am.

The police officer was dismissed the following morning, arrested and detained.

The hospital after being called out for delaying her treatment, released a statement denying the claim, but following investigations, it was discovered that they indeed delayed treatment for well over an hour, refusing interbank/POS transfers, and insisting on ₦150,000 cash payment before they would begin.

The police officer and members of the hospital staff would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.

RIP Angela.

FG Approves 10-Year Validity Period For Travel Passports.

The Federal Government has approved a 10-year validity period for Nigerian passports.

This followed a presidential approval to change the face of the e-passport, 10 years after it was introduced in the country.

The Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Service, Muhammed Babandede, added that the extended validity period would reduce the stress Nigerians went through every five years to renew their passports.

“One of the reforms he (President Buhari) has approved is that we would improve the quality, security of our passport booklets. Ten years after the enrolment of the e-passport system, we need to improve the security features.

You can’t keep documents for 10 years without seeing decreased values in them, so we are improving the security features which would raise the standards of the passports.

Though people will pay more, if they can pay more and get the booklets quickly, it’s good with improved security for 10 years validity. They would pay more but the document would be available, that’s good,” the CG explained.

Super Eagles And Wolves Goalkeeper Carl Ikeme Announces Retirement.

Wolverhampton wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 32.

The Nigeria international has been with the Molineux club for his whole career, making more than 200 appearances.

In June, Ikeme said he was in “complete remission” after “a tough year and intense chemotherapy”.

His decision to retire has come after consulting medical experts and Ikeme told his team-mates on Tuesday.

In a statement, Wolves chairman Jeff Shi praised the goalkeeper’s strength of character in “what has been a very challenging time for him”.

“Carl is more than just a player in our eyes – he is our brother and an important part of our family,” said Shi.

Ikeme joined the West Midlands club – who won the Championship last season to earn promotion to the Premier League – as a 14-year-old.

He was a regular when Wolves won League One in 2014 and played 10 times for Nigeria, who honoured him at this summer’s World Cup by naming him as their 24th squad member.

The Super Eagles were knocked out at the group stage in Russia and before the tournament their coach Gernot Rohr said: “My biggest regret is the absence of Carl.”
