Grief as MMM crashes, millions lose money

Lots of Zimbabweans are in a financial trauma as you read this, all thanks to the popular Ponzi scheme called MMM.

Thousands of people living in Zimbabwe, among them civil servants, vendors and more, were said to have lost thousands of dollars to fraudulent online pyramid scheme MMM Global Zimbabwe after the system collapsed recently.

The social financial network, which relied on an accelerating number of new members to pay off the old, abruptly terminated its services without any prior notice last week leaving participants stranded.

Iharare.co reports that these Zimbabweans joined the online investment scheme with the sole aim of “getting rich quickly”. It was said that the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe warned its people about the system, saying the scheme was fraudulent. The scheme prides itself as a mutual aid fund under which recruited members contribute money to assist others and are promised investment returns of 30 percent per month.

Some of the people left counting their losses told The Herald that they received emails that the scheme had been suspended until September 15.

One of the participants, Mr Tinashe Muza of Harare said: “All along things were moving in the right direction and we now have nowhere to claim our investments. When we started putting our funds in the scheme one could get assistance within seven days but things later changed to 14 days and when we were shut out the waiting period was 21 days. What it simply means is that the number of people in need of help has outnumbered the number of people joining. Right now we have nowhere to get our money which we invested.”

MMM stands for Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox and takes its name from its founder, Sergei Panteleevich Mavrodi of Russia. He founded MMM in 1989 and the scheme was declared bankrupt three years later leading to the disappearance of Mavrodi until his arrest in 2003. While some people who were skeptical about the scheme started with small amounts, it is believed some poured in thousands of dollars anticipating higher returns. The RBZ said the schemes were fraudulent as existing investors were ‘paid money not from genuine market investment of their funds, but from contributions made by new investors, until a point when the scheme can no longer attract new investors.”

Sergey Panteleevich Mavrodi is a Russian criminal and a former deputy of the State Duma. He is the founder of the МММ series of pyramid schemes Currently, the scheme is in Nigeria and it is called MMM – Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Lots of Nigerians are on the scheme and the scheme actually works (just like how it was working well at first in Zimbabwe). MMM Nigeria, is a Ponzi scheme that originated in Russia that has now set up in Nigeria.

Wikipedia says the company was involved in one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in the 1990s. It was estimated that thousands of people lost up to $10 billion dollars. Well, a lot of people think the scheme is legit and not a scam but the history of the company says the opposite. Only time will tell.

PSG Defender, Serge Aurier, Sentenced To Jail

Controversial Paris Saint-Germain full-back Serge Aurier has been sentenced to two months in prison for violence towards a police officer.

The Ivory Coast international, who was stopped by police in his Porsche Cayenne and asked to take a breath test after leaving a Parisian nightclub, abused and acted violently towards police officers before elbowing an officer in the chest on May 30th.

The 23-year-old was also ordered to pay €600 in fines by the Paris correctional tribunal, with a further €1,500 in costs.

The sentence, which has been described as ‘convertible’ means Aurier is more likely to receive a suspended sentence and perform community service rather than jail time.

Aurier has already announced plans to appeal the decision.

Chocolate City drag Brymo to court over N20 million

Chocolate City has dragged Brymo to court over N20 million invested in him. According to the management, Brymo only yielded N3 million before breaching his contract.

As reported by PremiumTimes:

“In a court document deposed at the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court, Brymo (the defendant) accused his former label of short-changing him, saying he never received any advance as agreed in his contract for the development of the album Son of A Carpenter.

“The plaintiff (Chocolate City) on many occasions told the defendant that it would give him a release from the contract and then changed its mind,” Brymo said.

“The defendant was never paid any royalties on the album Son of A Carpenter nor was he ever given a stated amount of the monies expended by them for the album.

“An email dated 14th May 2013 from the defendant clearly stated that the defendant is owed the sum of N925, 555.83 for the album Son of A Carpenter.”

Brymo also accused his former label of failing to employ a manager for him, transferring one they earlier gave to him to another artiste, and forcing him to single-handedly employ and pay his own manager.

“The defendant never provided a platform for it to release another album, as it did not have the means to do so,” said Brymo.

“It is based on the breach that the defendant wants to be released from the contract so he can continue with his career independent of the label.”

The label claims it paid for, on the singer’s behalf, every recording cost it authorzed and for which a prior approcal was sought and obtained by the singer.

Chocolate City’s deposition before the court stated that:

“It is a notorious fact in Nigeria music industry that most artists will fritter away the approved budget if same is handed over to them without producing any commercially and technically satisfactory Master recordings,”

“The artists are mostly not business inclined.

“The plaintiff avers that it has advanced and expended almost N20 million on the defendant but has not recoup (sic) up to N3 million.”

The label also accused Brymo of failure to actualise his career potential due to inability to “follow simple instructions”, insubordination, and active/passive promotion of Indian hemp which caused “serious damages to his brand and that of the plaintiff and other artists in the stable of the plaintiff”.

“The defendant’s active and passive promotion of drugs/marijuana included posting of pictures of Indian hemp/marijuana on his Twitter handle, Facebook or Instagram,” the label said.

“It got so bad that no reputable company was ready or willing to give him an endorsement deal, thereby deny (sic) himself and the plaintiff good revenue.

“In fact, a major telecommunication company in Nigeria suddenly pulled out of an endorsement deal worth N20 million which the plaintiff was negotiating for the defendant and which would have earned the plaintiff about N10 million.”

However, Chocolate City is asking for N100 million in damages while Brymo’s lawyers want the court to strike out the case because it lacked enough backing.

We Will Bomb University Of Ibadan Before October 1 – Terrorists

A terrorist group al-wilayat al-Islamiyya Gharb Afriqiyyah, on Friday threatened to bomb the University of Ibadan before Independence Day on October 1, The Punch reports. The message which was circulated to staff of the institution via mail correspondence and WhatsApp caused tension in the university.

The letter read in part:

“You people are an embarrassment to Nigeria and are the people that brought in western education to Nigeria. You doomed this nation and in turn you all are going to be doomed. Most of you are going to die before Independence Day. You will not spend the Independence Day in peace, you and your students.

“Detonation will start going from tomorrow till Independence Day and there is nothing you can do as we are among you. Even your little searches at the gate won’t do anything. By the time we are through with you, your government will be sorry.”

The Director of Communication of the institution, Olatunji Oladejo said the threat should not be taken seriously as it was the handiwork of mischievous individuals.

He said, “I also got it. Anyone could instigate such thing. Some people could be mischievous. Our international students are having their carnival on the campus and everywhere is peaceful. I attribute it to the handiwork of mischievous individuals and vehemently deny any commotion.

The Oyo state Police spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu confirmed that the state command had received the information, which he termed as a “rumour”, but said it was doing all it can to ensure adequate security of the institution.

He said, “We have received the information. The state Commissioner of Police, Samuel Adegbuyi, working in concert with the other security agencies, has put in place all necessary security arrangement to forestall such an ugly incident.

“We have deployed our intelligence officers to provide adequate security in the school. As it is, it is still a rumour but we don’t want to take things for granted and because of this, we have provided adequate security, not only for the school, but for the people of the state.

“We enjoin members of the public to go about their lawful businesses and to be law-abiding.”
